The Stiftsgartenbier is tightly connected with Bamberg’s brewing tradition. It is being brewed according to an original recipee of Bamberg’s oldest brewery: the brewery on Michaelsberg (the hill of the former St. Michael monastary of Bamberg, Bamberg’s oldest monastery). Beer had been brewed here from 12th to 20th century. "Bräu" (i.e. brewmaster, patron, owner) of Michaelsberg was amongst others Konrad Graser, who took over Hellerbräu in 1866. The recipee of Stiftsgartenbier, which we bring back to life now again, is part of his legacy. So this beer draws a connection between Bamberg’s beer tradition and modern brewing craft, between todays Hellerbräu on Stephansberg and the former brewery on Michaelsberg. The Stiftsgartenbier is being brewed with hops from Spalt (near Nuremberg) and from Bamberg’s Hopfengarten (hops garden). Already in the era of Konrad Graser hops was grown in Bamberg and was being used for brewing. And as the beers back then, the Stiftsgartenbier can today mature in our historic rock cellars until being bottled amber colored and cellar fresh. It remains unfiltered on purpose so that the yeast can contribute to its full flavor and complex aroma. With an alcohol contenct of 5.7% it makes a connection to the historic character of beers back then.
